Road Trip Journal

I kept a journal while we were on the road. In part to document the feeling of the places we visited, the little things that would get lost after another 100 miles. The main reason I did this was that I have a horrible memory, and also our memories aren’t really that reliable anyway.

This was as difficult as I had expected. The first few times you do anything new and positive, it’s exciting and fresh. Then you need to get to the point where it is a habit, and this in between is the hardest part. Most days I sat down to write. When I didn’t, I at least made up for it the next (or next next) day.

It’s a lot less poetic than I had fantasized when I began, but there isn’t a day that’s not accounted for. A few lines, below:

“We camped out on the floor of our apt and woke up today to ship our belongings and leave NYC. Following a parking ticket at Port Authority, we were off!”

“I’m getting a lot more comfortable driving. Got an alligator foot at a rest stop. I love it.”

“Charlie told us there’s a giant alligator that lives in a swamp there and some wild boars and rattlesnakes. We decided to go anyway.”

“We slept until 10 and had breakfast at the Texas Roadhouse Diner. French toast and more ‘y’all’s’ than I’ve heard in my entire life.”

“We woke up early and went downstairs for breakfast. The waffle iron was shaped like Texas so the waffles tasted better.”

“Then we went back to the Saint George, drank Lonestars and watched men’s figure skating.”

“We’ve extended our stay until Sunday. I love it here and don’t want to leave. We’ll make it to Joshua Tree and see what happens.”

“I think and think and think. So much thinking. I really hope they – the thoughts and the feelings – stay with me once we get there.”

“We hit the Utah border and I just kept thinking ‘the Mormons had the right idea.’ We drove along a river through a canyon while the sun set and ended up in Moab.”

“At some point, I moved to another slot machine and after a moment realized I didn’t have my phone.”
