I’ll be posting location-based highlights and reflections from our trip in the coming days and weeks, but to start, let’s take a look at our route and timeline.
WAIT! What was this trip, you ask? After six years of living in the lower east side, I decided it was time to pursue my own career as an artist and seek out creative space in California. Physical space, yes. But also mental, emotional, and spiritual space.
I fell in love with the high desert during a few trips to the Palm Springs area in 2017. Each time I returned to the city, I knew this move was inevitable. I bounced this idea around for quite some time, letting others in on the plan as I grew more and more confident that this was the right decision for me (sorry, Dad! Didn’t mean to keep you in the dark!)
Leaving New York was hard, but I’ll write more about that at another time.
I am happy to report that we only slightly veered from our original route, and we made it to Palm Springs in the 26 days we had scheduled. We drove approximately 6,300 miles, but if you count the added trip of driving our minivan and remaining belongings from Boulder to Joshua Tree, we drove 7,200 miles.
The first lesson I will share with you that I quickly learned is that a one-night stop in any location doesn’t necessarily guarantee you’ll be able to experience and see that location. Arriving just in time for dinner and leaving early the next morning didn’t allow the sightseeing we had imagined for many of these places.
That said, we stuck to the plan until we hit a wintry mix of precipitation and the icy roads kept us in Paris, TX for an extra night. This is where, as you will learn, we started to exercise our ability to adjust our route and schedule.
Below a map of each place we stopped to lay our heads. In the days and weeks ahead, I’ll delve into the people, experiences, and sights along the way.
